How you got your start: I started Busy Bee Organics in 2014 shortly after I moved to Jersey City. I studied nutrition and food for over a decade and always knew that I wanted to share everything that I learned on a grand scale. When realized that there was a shortage of fresh, healthy options in my community, I knew that it was the perfect time to launch my company.
We started by attending the Historic Downtown Farmers Market at Grove Street once a week. We quickly grew the business and wanted a way to continue to stay in touch with our customers. So after the summer ended, we morphed into a delivery service. Three years later, we oversee the organic food program at The Brunswick School, provide a selection of delicious, healthful brunch bites every weekend and fresh healthy grab and go options during the week at Bloomsbury Square, offer catering services, teach private cooking classes and prepare food for yoga retreats. We also participate in The Jersey City Project’s annual events and we still love going to the farmers market at Grove Street.
One piece of advice you have for other food entrepreneurs: Entrepreneurship is hard. We all have days we want to quit but the struggles that we face just make the rewarding days that much more satisfying.
What you wish you had known before you started your business: I wish I would have known how things would turnout in the future. I went through some extremely trying times, especially this past year. Pushing through those experiences made me stronger, better and wiser. That’s life, c'est la vie!
Your greatest challenge in your business and how are you overcoming it: Staffing is always a challenge. Food quality is so important and finding people who care about aesthetics, quality and organization can be hard. Now, we have a solid crew of people that I trust, rely on and genuinely care for deeply. I love my work family!
What you're most proud of about your business: I am proud of how far we have come organizationally. My passion for food has always oozed out of me but the lessons that I learned in the past year about managing my work family and organizing the company has been invaluable to me. I will continue to grow in this arena and I am excited to see what comes of that.
What’s yummy about being a food entrepreneur: I love that I get to wake up every day and live my passion. I am so blessed that people are supporting and loving what we do at the “Beehive." What more could I want?
