When did your farmers market get started and how did it come about?: We started in 2010 with the outdoor market; the indoor market began a year later. We had the vision of a farmers market for our community, and then approached the mayor and council. They enthusiastically said: "Run with it"!
What makes your farmers market unique?: We are a "pay it forward” market which means we are a non-profit, perhaps the largest one in the area, with the most variety. We contribute annual donations to a variety of special projects in the community.
Who are your regular market shoppers? What are their general demographics?: We usually welcome a combination of older adults and millennials who focus on wellness and community support.
When selecting vendors for your farmers market, what do you look for? Are there any gaps in types of vendors or products you are especially looking for?: Because we are so large, we look for unique/one-off products to appeal to vegan, organic, and paleo customers. We also feature vendors selling non-GMO products.
What advice you have for food and beverage entrepreneurs who want to be included in your farmers market?: The most important thing vendors can do is to have all of their "ducks in a row." I advise them to research all aspects of what it takes to be a successful market vendor. Even with outstanding products, so much more is necessary to be successful. We also have found that vendors who do best are those who have a dedicated team for support.
What are you most proud of about your farmers market?: We are most proud of the positive feedback that we have received from grateful market goers who are happy that we have brought this farmers market to the community.
Do you have plans to incorporate anything new in your farmers market in the upcoming season?: We are always looking to keep the concept fluid. One idea we are considering is adding more tips and demonstrations for food preparation.
