When did your farmers market get started and how did it come about?: The market has been in operation for approximately 10 years. Originally located in the rear parking lot of a bank on Amboy Avenue, the market relocated to its current location 8 years ago. Our move created greater visibility and allowed for a permanent wooden sign which has become our market logo. Our anchor farmer, Pop's Farm Market, has been with us from the start and embraces and guides new vendors to the market.
What makes your farmers market unique?: We’re unique because of Amboy Avenue. In the historic Clara Barton area of Edison, Amboy Avenue has a nice "downtown" feel in a suburban community of greater than 32 square miles.
Who are your regular market shoppers? What are their general demographics?:
Clara Barton is an older neighborhood with a number of seniors; however, the area is in the process of change, attracting both millennials and families. Adjacent to the market is a very popular coffee shop that attracts new customers to the market.
When selecting vendors for your farmers market, what do you look for? Are there any gaps in types of vendors or products you are especially looking for?: Over the past few years, we have lost two very popular vendors selling pickles and nuts/bulk snacks. Our customers continue to ask for them.
What is one piece of advice you have for food and beverage entrepreneurs who want to be included in your farmers market?: As with most markets, our vendors embrace each other. We have had the good fortune to have two "start ups" at the market (organic granola and green cleaning products) that began at the market and both have their products in Whole Foods. As they have grown, we have lost both and encourage others to join us!
What are you most proud of about your farmers market?: We try to do at least one special event per month partnering with the Greenway, YMCA, Mobile Family Success (Catholic Charities), Hands of Hope (food pantry) and others to promote healthy lifestyles. We enjoy being a resource for these groups and the community.
Do you have plans to incorporate anything new in your farmers market in the upcoming season?: We are in the process of planning our monthly activities and are always looking for new ideas!
